EPISODE 23

Finding Purpose in Pain and Chasing Dreams with Expert Guest Sondra King

I am so excited for today’s episode because we get to chat with a mother, an entrepreneur, a business owner, an author, and a woman who is modeling what it looks like to chase your dreams and connect to your purpose.

Introducing Sondra King!

Sondra describes herself as an entrepreneur by profession, inspirational writer by passion, and an author by purpose. She's also a nutrition enthusiast and the proud owner of K&B’s Smooth Nutrition, creating organic, nutrient-packed superfood smoothies that energize the body for optimal function. Sondra’s passion for health inspired a career towards helping others take control of their well-being, longevity and increased quality of life, and in our conversation she shared how she was able to find her purpose later on in her journey.

to kick off our conversation I wanted to know more about who Sondra is and how she got into the health and wellness space to begin with.

Sondra shares that she has always loved nutrition and writing, so in order to satisfy both areas of her life she initially started blogging about nutrition. But similarly to so many of us working moms, she eventually had to put her blogging to the side to show up for her corporate job and take care of her family.

Sondra was in the corporate space for 11 years and found herself feeling exhausted, so after COVID hit and she lost her job, she knew was ready to refocus. It was the first time in her life that she didn’t know what her plan B was.

Sondra asked herself – what is it that you want to do? What is something that really makes you happy, fulfills you, and helps you contribute to this world? It came back to writing, and Sondra knew that it’s what she needed to be doing.

While in her time of refocusing, Sondra was also battling health struggles. She experienced migraines, high blood pressure, and hypertension, and she wanted to do everything she could to avoid medication. She joined a week-long fasting challenge through her church and eliminated sweets, meats, and bread, and while her energy level was low due to her body’s acclimation to her work schedule, she noticed that her fast made her feel different.

Sondra noticed improvements in her migraines, digestion, and even anxiety. She decided to tack on another week of fasting, which then turned into becoming a vegetarian for 6 months. She dove into smoothies and research, continued her writing, and found herself intrigued by the healing power of nutrition.

it was this season of life that Sondra was then faced with unbearable pain that skyrocketed her transformation.

Sondra was invited to help co-write a book called The Breaking Point alongside a renowned author, and in the midst of this exciting time, her father became sick. She worked on the project despite initial fear and hesitation, but during a week of deadlines, her father suddenly passed away. Sondra was now in charge of her father’s obituary and supporting her family through the loss, all while taking on her best-selling project.

Sondra would cry, type, wipe her tears, type, and repeat.

While this time was one of the most significant pains Sondra had experienced, it also became the pivotal moment where she decided to do what she wanted to do moving forward, unapologetically. Once she completed co-writing the book she knew it was time to open up her smoothie business, and she reminded herself –

“you’ve been existing all these years, and now it’s time to live.”

The unbearable pain Sondra had experienced was transformative. It was the hardest time of life as well as the greatest for her. It propelled her into her purpose, and forced her to shed the layers that were holding her back. She shared some of the biggest lessons during this time and noted — “Sometimes you have to be uncomfortable to be comfortable. Sometimes you have to unlearn the things that you’ve learned. It’s okay to apply certain things to certain seasons of your life. It’s okay to have an open mind to change.”

So what was the biggest and most painful thing that Sondra had to unlearn herself? Her answer – fear. Sondra was always an over-thinker and found herself thinking up to 3 years ahead. She had to let go of the preparation, trust that she had the tools to be successful, and let go of the fear of not being accepted

“I’ve learned to take that leap of faith and put my foot on the gas – no brakes. I could either go gas with no brakes, or stay in neutral and try to figure it out. I decided to go out and make it happen.”

Sometimes you may not know if you are going to succeed, but you will never know if you don’t try.

As a final question to Sondra, I wanted to know how motherhood positioned her for all of the success that she has found. She shared that she has used her children as a source of inspiration alongside the ability to model what’s possible. She achieved a dream that she wanted to achieve and preaches that you need to learn how to make yourself happy and fulfilled to be able to contribute to others’ happiness and fulfillment.

May Sondra be today’s reminder that it’s never too late to make that pivot and chase your dreams.
